HORSES COUNT WITH PETPLAN EQUINE

Petplan Equine, the UK’s leading specialist equine insurance provider, today launches its new Equine Infographic, which is

designed as an easily accessible and colourful information tool for horse owners and the media.

The company has been providing cover for horses for more than 25 years and works closely with vets and other equine experts to promote responsible horse ownership.

The information provided in the infographic has been gleaned from the results of a recent survey commissioned by Petplan Equine. The key reason for the survey was to understand the needs and concerns of the average horse owner in 2013/2014 to enable Petplan Equine to provide the best service for its customers and potential customers.

From 1,235 people who responded to the online survey Petplan Equine has generated a guide to the average horse owner in the UK; who is female, aged 40-49, in full time employment and spends up to 39% of their income on their horse. They have been horse owners for more than 10 years and have one horse, plus a dog and/or a cat. They spend 2-4 hours a day with their horse, which is part-stabled at a DIY livery yard, and they ride 4-6 days a week. They use their horse mainly for hacking and some dressage, have access to bridleways and an arena and would travel up to 25 miles for a competition or activity.

Most of the UK population has been affected at some time by the recent recession and 39% admit that the major cutback in spending has been on riding lessons. The three greatest concerns of horse owners in 2014 are the cost of keeping a horse, the cost of vets fees and road safety, although 92% have never been involved in a road accident with their horse.

With the cost of vets’ fees high on the list of concerns it is no surprise that 84% of horse owners insure their horse. Petplan Equine paid out more than £11 million in claims in 2013 and offers a variety of policies to provide a wide range of cover to suit the individual needs of horse owners.

One of the more colourful statistics revealed by the survey was the unusual pets owned by some horse owners. While dogs were the most popular choice of the 86% who own another pet there were some rather more exotic ones as well including chinchillas, hawks, bearded dragons, cavies, ferrets, rats, snakes, tarantulas and Madagascan hissing cockroaches.

The new Equine Infographic is available on the Petplan Equine website http://www.petplanequine.co.uk/horse-knowledge-infographic.asp and will also be used in a print advertising campaign. Visitors to the website can click on a statistic featured in the Infographic and access further information about the subject.

“Petplan Equine is dedicated to helping its customers care for their horses,” commented Charlotte Collyer, senior marketing executive. “We were delighted by the response to our survey, which identified some very valuable information that we have incorporated into the Infographic. We hope that it will prove to be a useful online tool for anyone wanting information about some of the key areas of horse management as well as a good source of statistics regarding the modern horse owner.”- www.petplanequine.co.uk/events/horse-advice.asp
